Officers tweeted the revelation after social media became awash with talk of a mysterious glowing, possibly extraterrestrial, object falling to earth.

Some had even reported the sighting to police, with officers in Western Australia writing: “One in custody after a recent suspected UFO landing in Hedland.”

A fireball was seen leaving a trail of smoke as it fell from the sky, with claims it started a fire as it landed.

Danielle Mautama, was travelling near Karratha in the Pilbara region of the state, when she witnessed it.

She said: “We originally thought it was a shooting star, but it had blue and green colours. And then we thought maybe fireworks, but the path didn’t look like fireworks, because it was going horizontally.

“So we came home and saw online that other people had seen or heard things as well, and now we are super curious about what it was.”

One witness said they saw the object glowing purple and green before it crashed near Port Hedland.

Fire was seen near the crash site, fuelling speculation of a UFO or space debris.

Unfortunately, for those hunting for confirmation of alien life, the tweet by South Hedland Police had its tongue firmly in its cheek.

The comment came with a clearly mocked up cartoon police mug shot of an alien in custody from the Men in Black movies and the hashtags #nolittlegreenmenthistime and #notacoveruppromise.

The officers said the only fireball of the evening was the burning car near the town.
