HONOLULU \u2014 Astronomers have identified a small asteroid that appears to have followed Earth for decades, triggering sensational claims that an unknown spacecraft has been secretly monitoring the planet. The object, designated 2025 PN7, was detected in 2025 by the Pan-STARRS1 survey telescope in Hawaii, but calculations using earlier observations indicate that it may have remained near Earth unnoticed for roughly 60 years. Despite the dramatic spacecraft shown in the accompanying thumbnail, researchers have found no evidence that 2025 PN7 is artificial, controlled, or transmitting signals.<\/p>\n

It is believed to be a natural asteroid measuring only about 20 to 30 meters across, making it extremely faint and difficult to observe. Astronomers classify it as a quasi-satellite, sometimes informally called a quasi-moon, because its orbit around the Sun closely matches Earth\u2019s one-year orbital period. From our planet\u2019s moving perspective, the asteroid appears to trace a looping path around Earth, creating the illusion that it is an orbiting companion. Both Earth and 2025 PN7 travel independently around the Sun, while the combined gravitational influence of Earth, the Moon, and other planets continually reshapes the asteroid\u2019s path. This orbital resonance explains why the object can remain in Earth\u2019s neighborhood for many decades without either escaping immediately or falling toward the planet. Computer simulations suggest that it entered its current quasi-satellite configuration sometime in the mid-20th century and could remain there for several more decades before gravitational interactions shift it into a different type of orbit.<\/p>\n

Its discovery came so late because small, dark asteroids reflect very little sunlight and are visible only under favorable observing conditions. They can also spend much of their time in parts of the sky that are difficult for ground-based telescopes to survey. Scientists say that its prolonged proximity does not mean it has been deliberately \u201cstalking\u201d humanity, and current orbital calculations do not identify it as an imminent impact threat.
