Astronomers routinely use the term “close approach” for objects passing within millions of miles of our planet—a vast distance in everyday terms—and the phrase does not mean that an impact is expected. NASA’s Asteroid Watch dashboard lists approaching objects that will travel within 4.6 million miles, or about 19.5 times the average distance between Earth and the Moon.

An asteroid larger than roughly 150 meters that can enter this region may be classified as “potentially hazardous,” but that technical label describes its size and possible orbital proximity, not an immediate prediction of disaster. The fiery, red-hot object shown in the accompanying thumbnail is therefore an artistic illustration. An asteroid passing safely through space would not normally glow like a meteor, because the intense heating associated with a fireball begins only when an object plunges into an atmosphere at high speed. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies calculates asteroid trajectories using repeated telescope observations, measuring each object’s position against background stars and refining its orbit as new data arrive. Its Sentry monitoring system then searches those projected paths for possible impacts decades into the future.

NASA currently reports no known significant asteroid impact threat to Earth for at least the next century. That conclusion does not mean astronomers ignore close encounters. Flybys allow researchers to improve measurements of an asteroid’s size, shape, rotation and composition, while radar observations can dramatically reduce uncertainty about its future path. The history of asteroid Apophis demonstrates how this process works.

Early calculations after its 2004 discovery raised concern about a possible collision, but years of optical and radar tracking eliminated the danger. Apophis will pass approximately 20,000 miles above Earth’s surface on April 13, 2029—closer than many geosynchronous satellites—yet NASA confirms that it poses no impact risk for at least 100 years. A similar refinement occurred with asteroid 2024 YR4: preliminary observations briefly produced a small but notable probability of an Earth impact in 2032, but additional measurements reduced that risk until NASA concluded it posed no significant threat. Webb observations later ruled out even a lunar collision during the encounter. The appropriate response to the latest asteroid headline is therefore attention, not panic.

Scientists will continue monitoring the object until its trajectory is precisely established, and any meaningful change would be published through official planetary-defense channels. Close asteroid passages are reminders that Earth shares its neighborhood with thousands of moving rocks, but they are also demonstrations of how effectively modern observatories can discover, track and evaluate them. Unless NASA’s impact-monitoring systems report a genuine probability of collision, a “huge asteroid passing Earth” is primarily a valuable scientific opportunity—not an approaching apocalypse.

A Huge Asteroid Is About to Pass Earth—Should We Be Worried?
