Both visitors arrived on hyperbolic trajectories, meaning they are moving too fast to be permanently captured by the Sun and originated beyond our planetary system. But despite sharing an interstellar origin, the two objects have presented scientists with very different stories.

ʻOumuamua, discovered in October 2017, appeared as an unresolved point of light with dramatic brightness variations, suggesting that it had an unusual elongated or flattened shape and was tumbling through space. It also experienced a small unexplained acceleration after passing the Sun. Comet-like outgassing remains the leading natural explanation for that extra push, yet telescopes detected no obvious coma or familiar dust tail, leaving the object difficult to classify. By contrast, 3I/ATLAS displays clear cometary activity. As solar heat warms its frozen material, gas and dust escape and form a visible coma around the nucleus.

That behavior makes it far easier to recognize as a natural comet, although its exact size is difficult to determine because the surrounding cloud can appear much larger and brighter than the solid body hidden inside. Scientists have used multiple observatories, including the James Webb Space Telescope, to investigate its chemical composition. Webb detected signatures associated with water, carbon dioxide and methane, while observations have also identified carbon monoxide, carbonyl sulphide and water ice. The most extraordinary clue is its unusually high abundance of deuterium, a heavy form of hydrogen. Measurements indicate levels roughly 30 times greater than those usually found in solar-system comets, suggesting that 3I/ATLAS formed in an exceptionally cold environment, possibly during an early period in the Milky Way’s history. This chemical fingerprint may allow researchers to examine the conditions surrounding a distant star system long before the comet was ejected into interstellar space. Neither 3I/ATLAS nor ʻOumuamua has provided verified evidence of alien technology. No controlled maneuver, artificial signal or engineered structure has been confirmed, and dramatic spacecraft-like depictions circulating online are illustrations rather than telescope photographs. NASA identifies ʻOumuamua as the first known interstellar object, 2I/Borisov as the second and 3I/ATLAS as the third. The real importance of 3I/ATLAS is that astronomers detected and studied it with more capable instruments than were available during ʻOumuamua’s brief visit. That improved coverage could prevent many of the unanswered questions that still surround the 2017 object.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Is 3I/ATLAS the Next ʻOumuamua? In origin, yes: it is another rare messenger from between the stars. In behavior, however, it appears less mysterious and more recognizably cometary—while offering an even richer opportunity to study material formed in an alien planetary system.

Is 3I/ATLAS the Next ʻOumuamua?
