1. What is 3I/ATLAS?

• Official Name: 3I/ATLAS (also called “3I” for short).
• Discovery: Found in February 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).
• Type: Interstellar object — it came from outside our solar system. Only a few such objects are known (like `Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019).
• Trajectory: Its path indicates it is just passing through, not bound by the Sun’s gravity.

2. Why did some speculate it might be alien technology?

• Unusual behavior: Some researchers noticed 3I/ATLAS had a trajectory and motion slightly different from typical comets.
• High brightness variability: Its brightness changed in unexpected ways, which reminded people of the ‘tumbling’ motion of `Oumuamua.
• Past precedent: `Oumuamua triggered similar speculation about being an alien probe because of its unusual shape and speed.

3. Why it probably isn’t an alien spaceship

• Natural explanations: Most of its oddities can be explained by cometary activity:
  • Outgassing can cause irregular motion.
  • Non-uniform shape can lead to varying brightness.
• Spectral analysis: The object’s composition matches icy and rocky interstellar objects rather than artificial materials.
• No signals detected: No electromagnetic signals, propulsion, or other indications of artificial origin were observed.

4. The likely reality

• 3I/ATLAS is almost certainly a natural interstellar comet, giving astronomers a rare opportunity to study materials from outside our solar system.
• The “alien spaceship” idea is mostly a fun media exaggeration, sparked by public fascination with mysterious objects.
